We had the pleasure of climbing Kili with XPats and Team leader Chez. It was a life changing experience and the entire team was exceptional! They really made us feel like family and guided us through the entire journey. Chez is an excellent leader with many years of experience that was so beneficial for us. XPATS is a very professional and caring locally owned, operated and staffed organization. Our group of 4 trekkers took the 9 day Northern Route to Kilimanjaro and had a wonderful experience. From the owner to the guides and porters, we felt very well supported and cared for. A large part of an intensive experience like this is the interaction and relationship developed between the clients and the guiding group. Ours was excellent and it made the adventure more than simply a physical test. We learned about people supporting us, their way of life and culture. We also did a two day Ngorongoro Crater Safari which was a highlight of he experience. I highly recommend engaging them in a Tanzania adventure.

Had an absolutely amazing time doing the 7-day Machame route on Kilimanjaro with Xpats. Our lead guide, Andrew, did an amazing job preparing us for what to expect on the mountain and safely got our entire group to summit with the support of his assistant guide, Benjamin, and his entire team of amazing porters. I signed up for the 7 day Machame hike with XPATS encouraged by the good reviews and assistance provided by the knowledge and professional John who is quick to reply. I wanted to be in a smaller group going up the mountain as allowed for more attention and dialogue with team.

I was expertly guided by the experienced Andrew, I felt confident, safe and assured throughout the hike. He led the team very well and supported us superbly through the hike. Abedi prepared excellent food, Mathias ensured we were well looked after and comfortable, and Benjamin supported us day to day as we hiked. The whole team brought great positive energy throughout.

8-Day Kilimanjaro Trek with X-Pat International: Exceptional Service, Safe and Personalised

I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for my 40th birthday as a solo traveler, and I could not have chosen a better company than X-Pat International. From the moment I was picked up at the airport on time and stress free, everything was seamless. Safety was never in question. Even our belongings were always watched over by porters while we trekked.

Our group was very small, just three climbers, which made the whole experience far more personal. I often had Hudson or John, both very experienced guides, to myself, which allowed me to hike at my own pace without feeling rushed. Hudson has climbed Kilimanjaro 178 times, and his experience showed in everything from pacing to timing our routes to avoid the big crowds. His encouragement, patience, and motivational words carried me through summit night. I can honestly say I would not have made it without him.

The support team was outstanding. The porters were always willing to help, offering a hand when I was exhausted, carrying my backpack if needed, and keeping spirits high with kind words. The food was excellent, with healthy daily snacks like nuts, bananas, fruit, and juice. A hot water bottle was provided every night in the tent, which made a big difference in the freezing cold.

Practical tips: it gets very cold at night, especially on summit night. Bring very warm clothes, multiple layers, long johns, a good down jacket, fleeces, beanies, gloves, and a blanket if you can. Hand warmers and foot warmers are lifesavers. Bring a big towel and a small one, as you will want both. I leased bulky items through X-Pat including a duffel bag, sleeping bag, hiking poles, rain pants, and winter pants, which saved me the hassle of traveling with them.

What makes X-Pat International truly stand out is their team. They balance professionalism and safety with genuine warmth and encouragement. They created an environment where I felt cared for, confident, and able to achieve a dream I was not sure was possible.

This trek was one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and I would recommend X-Pat International without hesitation to anyone considering Kilimanjaro. They are the difference between summiting and not summiting.

Me and my son (13 years old) did the 6 days Machame tour with Xpats! The trip was perfect: comfortable tents, professional guides and outstanding food - the teams took fantastic care of us and we reached the summit with their support. Great experience doing the lemosho 8 days Kilimanjaro trek and the 5 days safari. Comfortable and spacious tents. Knowledgeable, fun, patient and professionnal guides for both activities. Most unique trip we ever did. Thanks to John Baron who helped us right from the start with his honest advice and keeping us safe and sound all the time in Tanzania. I with my daughter and grandson climbed the Kilimanjaro. Sadly I got sick after 4 camps and had to quit but my daughter and grandson successfully reached the summit and made me proud. During climbing we were locked after very well by the team that John sent to us.

John Baron and his team at Xpats International treated us like Royalty from the moment we walked out of the airport until we were dropped off on our return. We combined a private 8 day hike via the Lemosho route followed by a 3 day Safari with 2 nights in the Serengeti and a half day drive through the Ngorongoro on our return to Arusha. We also had a spare day at the end of the adventure and John kindly drove us around Arusha showing the highlights including a Tanzanite exchange and the cultural heritage centre.

We stayed at the Greenside Hotel in Arusha which is about 45min-1hrs drive from Kilimanjaro airport. The hotel was chic, clean and the staff invariably welcoming and helpful. We had a briefing that evening in the hotel and then departed for the Lemosho gate via bus with some members (porters and guides) the following morning. It was a several-hour drive with a fair level of dust and diesel pollution, but largely over paved roads until we got closer to the park. We had quick stops along the way to pick up the rest of the crew. In total, we had 2 guides and 10 porters to support us. And support us they did! It was extraordinary and they hauled everything up the mountain to the various camps. This included a portable toilet, a table and 2 chairs, sleeping cots and obviously the tents and supplies. The tents were tall, comfortable and included an enclosed sleeping area as well as a sort of anteroom where we could eat.

We knew we had a good team as every evening we’d hear them all joking and laughing despite the physical duress that they were subjected to each day. The characters included, “Happy” the chef, Andrew our main guide – who by the way has climbed Kilimanjaro over 150 times and was a well-versed botanist -, Daniel our quiet-spoken 2nd guide, Sam-Willis, a porter who accompanied us to the summit, “Mr Happy New Year”, an exuberant lad on his first trip in the National park and many more hard working troopers. Together they kept us pointed in the right direction, dismantled and packed everything, passed us on the rugged terrain and then set up everything at the next campsite before our arrival. Just incredible and not one of them appeared to find it physically overwhelming. In contrast, you’d pass many porters in other groups who clearly were struggling to cope with the elevation and topography. Speaking of the terrain, it was diverse and magical. You pass through 5 ecological zones on your way to the summit from rainforest to arctic and although the hikes, distance-wise, appear short, there are lots of ups and downs and you will get a good work-out each day. However, everything is preamble to the final climb where you will get up before midnight and climb more than 1.3 kilometers in elevation in about 4.5 kilometers distance from Barafu camp ~4500m to Uhura peak at 5895m. It is strenuous, cold, exhilarating and rewarding but not technical at all (i.e. no ropes/crampons needed) and the views at dawn are unbelievable. The descent is also not for the faint of heart and if you proceed down to Mweka camp at about 3050 m directly, your quads and knees will protest. One last shout out to the Xpats team: without them, it is doubtful we’d have summited and, in fact, we felt a responsibility to do so on their behalf.

For the safari, be prepared for some robust driving. Xpats arranged for a well-maintained Toyota land-cruiser with pop-up top and an experienced guide/driver (most of the safari tours use the same vehicle). We drove from Arusha to the Ngorongoro crater park on our way to the Serengeti on paved roads. However, once you enter the park and all the way to the Serengeti it is unpaved and you will get bounced around. Nevertheless, the vehicle managed this with ease and was equipped with snacks, drinks and comfortable seats. We eventually arrived at the Karibu ‘mobile’ Bush Camp in the South of the park. You will stay in a tent that is more like a hotel room replete with shower, flushing toilet, vanity, 4 poster bed, sofa and views of the wildlife nonchalantly doing their ‘thing’ within feet of the tent. The camp also came equipped with a bar and dining room. And here we thought the camping on Kili was ‘glamping’!

As for the wildlife, the sights and sounds of the Serengeti are impossible to put into words. In addition to the big 5, we documented seeing well over 30 species, often up close and personal, that otherwise you’d only see in a zoo. By and large they were utterly unconcerned about our presence and just got on with their business of sleeping, killing, eating, copulating and taking care of the kids. On the return journey we ventured into the Ngorogoro crater which is like it’s own self-enclosed safari park of 250+ sq Km. Again, just a draw-dropping experience with the only major difference being that you were confined to the trails in contrast to the Serengeti where you could venture almost anywhere the land cruiser could travel.

So, to conclude, we can’t thank John and his Xpats team enough for their efforts. They made this once-in-a-lifetime experience, educational, meaningful and utterly memorable.

I would highly recommend traveling with XPATS International. My husband and I traveled with a group of friends, all of us have traveled internationally quite extensively before; however, none of us had much in the way of camping experience. This is where John and his team excelled. Each day of the hike before we arrived at camp - the team had arrived ahead of us and already had our camp set up with our own private tents, porta potties, and a separate tent with which we could enjoy our meals with friends. The team was experienced, very hard working, and the most easygoing group to work with. I would highly recommend working with them.

John and his local team were excellent. I did a 6 day Kili summit followed by a 2 day safari. They're extremely flexible and helpful with scheduling.

They go out of their way to help you with what ever you need. Showed me around town, taking me off the beaten track to less touristy shops and places to eat. The homegrown climbing team made me really feel like I was apart of the team rather than just another tourist, which was especially important being an experienced solo mountaineer & traveler. I got to know the team, sharing meals and stories with the team on the trail and at dinner while I got to learn a little Swahili.

John pairs you up with excellent characters that match your skills and personality. Hudson was the best guide, especially for having to deal with an excited quick mountaineer guide from CO. My safari driver was hilarious company and knew the best routes to avoid crowds and get angles to view the wild life.

John himself is also a local. He was extremely helpful, organizing everything. He's available around the clock to support in any way you need. He doesn't try to upsell you and sell you anything he doesn't believe in. Giving you suggestions on trips and locations to explore outside of his zone.

Overall can not recommend any other company to go with when travelling to Mt Kili and the Safari. Being indigenous myself it was important to me find a homegrown team that lives and breaths it, rather than a overseas travel agency that just books you and overcharges for their overhead.

John, who runs this operation, is amazing. He will take care of you and make sure that everything goes smoothly. I had three friends summit Kilamanjaro and it was a life-changing experience. Huge shout out to Hudson, Andrew, and Samuel. They all are incredible guides!! No favor is too big for John. He will go out of his way to take you to restaurants or get you whatever you need. I was only able to do two days of Mount Kilamanjaro due to tearing my meniscus in July. John and his driver drove four hours to come pick me up then four hours back to Arusha so I could, get a taste of the experience. Very kind.
While the rest of the group was summoning, I chose to do an Xpats Safari. It was also excellent and I saw so many beautiful animals. Many many baby elephants, beautiful lions, and tons of other wildlife too. I even saw lions mating. The lodge John put me up in (I believe was called the Serengeti Safari Lodge) was very nice with beautiful views and a lovely balcony. I did not care for the food however or maybe I just drank some bad water. Not sure. Watching the sunset with a glass of wine on the balcony was priceless. My driver Fidelis was the best. He was a great driver—very skilled. He also had an eye for finding animals! All in all a great experience and very affordable.

Signed up for the 8-day Lemosho route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro followed by 5-day Safari tour. I chose XPATS International because of the seamless assistance provided; information was readily available on the website and John is quick in his replies. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was a breeze due to the care and comfort provided by my guide, Harold, and team. Appreciated Harold’s care in checking on my well-being constantly throughout the entire trek, especially going on short acclimatisation hikes to lower the chances of altitude sickness. My first ever safari experience was pleasant with plenty of explanation from my guide Silvanus and we managed to spot the big 5 successfully. A key highlight was to witness a male lion feeding at sunrise, thanks to Silvanus’ idea to leave the lodge early.

My daughter and I booked a private 6 day Machame Route up Kilimanjaro followed by a 2 day safari with john from Xpats. While researching what company to go with I choose XPats because it's a locally owned company and John was always quick to respond with any and all questions I had. From the moment we arrived in Arusha from the time we left, John took care of us. Everything was as planned. Our climb with Arnold as our guide and a team of 10 porters was perfect. Our accommodations before and after the climb in Arusha were perfect. Our 2 day safari John arranged for us with our guide Fedeliz was awesome. I couldn't have asked for more. We chose Xpats International for our 6-day Machame Route trek, and their locally owned and operated setup initially caught our attention.

From our first message with John, the owner, it was clear how professional Xpats International is. Communicating via WhatsApp, John responded quickly and thoroughly to all our questions.

Our climb was as a pair, supported by a team of 2 guides, 5 porters, and a chef. Our guides, Hardson and Andrew, had extensive knowledge of the mountain, sharing insights about the flora, rocks, and historical events throughout the trip. They closely monitored our progress to ensure we stayed on track.

The campsite setup was a pleasant surprise. We had large, spacious tent with beds and comfortable mattresses. The biggest surprise was the food. Dennis, the chef, consistently prepared outstanding meals that would have been impressive even in a restaurant. Airlood, who took care of us at the campsite, paid incredible attention to detail.

The team went above and beyond to make the trip special. If you're planning to do the hike, consider bringing snacks to share with the team from your home country. It's a great way to bond and have fun. You absolutely do not need to bring any food or snacks for yourself, as Xpats International provides more than enough high-quality food and snacks for the entire duration.

What an incredible experience, all I wished for and more. I discovered xpats international with some internet searching and began speaking with John who was so quick to respond to any questions about the trip, I instantly felt comfortable and knew this was the company for us.
I was not disappointed, the porters couldn't do enough for us to make the trip as comfortable as possible, from a large tent with table and chairs and a raised bed with foam mattress, hot water bottles, lanterns, hot water to wash in multiple times per day. And the food created by our personal chef Dennis was exceptional, some dishes were restaurant quality food, teas coffees, you name it, it was home from home, all served by a lovely young guy called airlood ( not sure on spelling) Airlood really felt like a friend on this trip, a smiling face and will do anything to please attitude.
the other porters worked constantly around the clock and always had a smile and time to talk.
The two guides Hardson and Andrew were fantastic so knowledgeable about the mountain, tanzania history, tribe history flora and forna along with the wildlife.
10 out of 10 to these guys too. I learned so much.

I climbed Kilimanjaro and the hardest thing was the climb itself. Everything else was fantastic, from airport pickup, to my hotel stay, and the tent and comfort while on the trail. Highly recommend this company got anyone wanting to hike Kilimanjaro with an affordable price but with many comforts included.

I had 10 perfect and very well organized days thanks to John, I did Machame 6 days with Oscar and a 3 day safari with Fidelis. The accomodation and hospitality of everyone was always excellent.

John was fantastic in organizing the tour before my arrival to Tanzania. He was prompt in replying message. Arnold was the guide who guided us in the eight days expedition!

We had 3 people in our group. All of us were very different physically. One of the teammates were having diarrhea in the first 2 days and Arnold carefully took care of him and he had a full recovery before the summit.

I had some hiking experiences in South America with our companies. This was by far the most luxurious camping experience ever! They had bunk bed with mattress and good quality tents. I was not expecting that much.

Every morning, one of the crews woke us up with morning coffee while it was freezing in the dark. All the meals were delicious. They provided enough snacks for us to eat during our daily trek.

Last but not least, Arnold safely took us up to the summit and brought us down to the camp!

All in all, I would recommend this company for your Kilimanjaro expedition!

We did the 8 day route. John helped us plan our journey from start to finish. He was amazing and gave me confidence in booking and competing the trip. I have completed Lemosho 8 days route in a team of 4. Everything went well, the guides (Oscar and Lagos) were very experienced and gave me confidence at every point of the route. Every single question was answered, every doubt was addressed and explained.
Our health condition was under their attention, at any point of time we've got an advice how to handle any discomfort or little sickness. Summit success really depend on how you feel, so being in shape is really crucial to reach the summit. Many people say that the mental part is also critical, but it was not an issue for our team, we all were extremely charged and motivated to reach the summit therefore we did not need any additional boost.

Food was sufficient, camp equipment was in order, tents were always ready upon our arrival to the camp. Porters were just doing their hard job, ready to help with any small issue, well, that concerns the whole team though, including John, the organiser.

John was available at any moment before the trip, during and after, for any question and ready to find a solution when required. He kept my family informed as of hike progressed while I had no connection on the mountain.

The trip with XPATS was from the very first point of contact with John to the time I've got back home very well planned and organized! I got the contact information through a common friend and John was willing to help out at every step during the vacation as well as beforehand for planning - he even supported me during the visa process.

I've done the Kilimanjaro hike as well as a safari (Ngorongoro crater and Tarangire - really recommend doing it!!) and everything worked out well. Since I had some days left before my flight home John even supported me with trips in the Arusha area like a visit to a local Masai village or several museums. Airport pickup and drop-off worked also very well.

Kilimanjaro hike:
John gave me a detailed intro and overview regarding the main points to consider for the hike (e.g. which route, medicine, equipment, preparation - food and physical etc.) even before booking with him. Once I booked he guided me through all the necessary steps to be well prepared for the trip. My guide Oscar did a very good job - as all the other porters and the chef! Food and general care on the mountain was really good. However, If you're thinking about doing the hike...I'd include a private toilet for sure! 😉

Overall I really enjoyed working with John and would do it 100% again with XPATS!

John does a great job with xpats international! When we got there, he picked us up from the airport and took us to the hotel. I wasn’t feeling good, and he organized a Covid test. Unfortunately, the test was positive, which is why I decided not to climb Kilimanjaro yet. However, as soon as I told John, he reorganized with the porters and managed to come up with great alternative activities. He showed me the authentic Tanzanian way of living, and the countryside and brought me to many wondrous sights in and around Arusha (hot springs, waterfalls, Arusha national park, the tanzanite museum, Natural art gallery, a coffee farm where we made our own coffee, and an orphanage). So even though I did not climb Kilimanjaro, I had a great experience in Tanzania thanks to John and found a great friend!
So even if things go south in Tanzania, you can be sure to have someone around that keeps you great company and makes the best out of your trip! Hanging out with him, I also recognized how much he cared about the hikers and how happy he was when they succeeded.

I had the best time of my life climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with XPATS Internațional!! I was able to successfully reach the summit with their help and guidance! The climb was much easier than I thought but shouldn’t be underestimated nonetheless. Everithing was well organized and fantastic. From food, care, to services! I highly recommend them!!! Every body on the team is very friendly ,profesional and always there to help you.
Overall I was satisfied with the whole experience: the food was great and always warm , the tents were in great condition and spacious enough for me and my mom and the guides always gave us advice on how to dress depending on the weather.

Want to say massive thanks to John at Xpats international great company he called me one night as agreed and explained how everything goes was on phone for 45 minutes had lots of my questions answered, made me feel safe and confident going ahead with doing Mount Kilimanjaro.
Oscar was my guider he really is a expert at his job and a nice man with lots of knowledge learned me a lot about Kilimanjaro. Checked my oxygen level and heart beat every day and kept track wrote down scale of how I felt If had bad stomach, headache or Nausea etc, made shure it was safe for me to carry on.
All the food was delicious thanks to Dennis the chef even like cucumbers now cucumber soup was very tasty. Always more than enough food served three course meal for breakfast, dinner and tea time. Also snacks provided for hike everyday. Big fair play to all porters don’t know how they carry so much stuff on their heads up that mountain it really amazes me, wouldn’t like a headbutt off these people must have some power on them heads. A wash bowl of hot water every morning and once arrived next camp was really nice to freshen up. Can’t Thank the team enough couldn’t have done it without them absolutely brilliant. If anyone thinking of doing Mount kilimanjaro or Safari I’d highly recommend Xpats International what a amazing life time experience I’ll never forget. Jambo jambo!! Hakuna matata!!

I can’t say enough about how amazing my Kilimanjaro summit was thanks to XPATS International! First, the incredible assistance from John in preparation and planning. Not only did he spend a half hour on the phone with me helping me decide which route would be best, but he followed up with emails and messages to make sure I had everything I needed. Highlight - se sent menus and recipes of the foods I’d be eating so I knew what to expect.

The guides and porters were top notch! As a solo female hiker, I was definitely apprehensive. But they took such great care of me! They kept me entertained, made me feel safe and protected, and didn’t get frustrated when I asked them for the millionth time how to say the same words in Swahili! Camp was always comfortable and the food was amazing!

I celebrated my birthday on summit day and the whole team made it special. First, with muffins, candles and singing at wake up, a toast at summit, and a birthday cake back at the gate.

Starting with our hike to the famous Uhuru peak, he provided us with the best team that accompanied us. Hands up for Oscar, the lead guide who made it possible for us to reach the summit!
We also went in the Safari in the Tarangire and Ngorongoro National Parks where we saw a variety of wild african animals in their natural habitat.
Of course, our vacation could not miss Zanzibar and the trips in the surrounding areas.

John and his company Xpats International took care of all related things, from transportation, meals and accomodations. We couldn't have asked for more.

I had a truly unforgettable experience doing the 8 day Lemosho route with Xpats. We were looked after from the minute we landed at the airport, and made to feel very welcome by John and the guides. Our whole itinerary was very well organised and laid out so we always knew what we were doing and John went above and beyond making sure all our needs were met.

Our trip up Kilimanjaro itself was an absolute joy from start to finish. All the guides and porters took such brilliant care of us, encouraging us to sing and play games and learn Swahili whilst we walked. I'm sure we had the most fun out of all the groups on the mountain! The food was excellent as well, they were able to cater to dietary requirements and the portions were very generous, I never went hungry once!

Overall a brilliant trip, made even more memorable and stress-free by knowing we had John looking out for us at each step. I would definitely recommend Xpats to anyone wanting to climb Kili!

We have just finished the 8 day Lemosho route with XPATS. The guides and porters were amazing, spirits were high every single day! We were fed extremely well the whole trip, and it was delicious. Every morning we were greeting with tea & coffee, when we arrived at camp popcorn, and a meal would be waiting for us!

The guides were very knowledgable and safety aware. We learnt lots about plants, Swahili, culture, and overall had an amazing time with them! They kept us singing, chanting and dancing the whole way to the top! We all summited successfully also!

John was super helpful throughout the trip, and before it - answering any questions we had no matter the time of day! He helped us get the best prices for things, arranged a safari for us in Arusha National Park and showed us the best of Arusha food/culture! Would definitely recommend using XPATS!

I had an amazing experience climbing Mt Kilimanjaro in June 2022 with Xpats International on the Lemosho 8 day route. We were looked after phenomenally by the crew on the trek and also from John at Xpats on the ground. John spent a lot of time communicating with us prior to the trip to make sure we had the correct kit/information we needed for a successful summit. The experience was enhanced by the friendliness of the crew, amazing porter services and excellent food and water supplies to keep us going. There was never a dull moment as we were singing and chanting and dancing with our guides and porters along the trek. Our medical stats were monitored closely and we all felt very looked after by the guides. It was a challenge but I definitely could not have done it without the support of the crew and John.

Really enjoyed the trip! John has been great with helping me prepare for climbing Kilimanjaro. He organised it perfectly, helped with last minute questions and I was able to reach the top relatively easily! Guides and crew were good. Really great to reset a bit and enjoy the amazing nature.
