The Lemosho route is one of Mount Kilimanjaro’s newest trails, and it avoids crowds on the first ascent. This provides visitors a few days of peaceful trekking to take in the stunning scenery before the track joins the Machame route.

If this is your first-time climbing at high elevations (above 3,000m/9,900ft), you should know that the most effective way to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is to properly acclimatize during your hike. Long and gradual routes like the 7-day Lemosho route are perfect for acclimatization systems to be utilized. See, on Mt Kilimanjaro, there are 2 systems that prevent altitude sickness:

  • The first method, Pole Pole (Slow-Slow in English), requires you to be on the mountain long enough for your body to acclimate to various altitudes.
  • The second method, Trek-High & Sleep-Low, calls for trails to have gradual inclines in order for you to trek to high elevations and sleep at lower altitudes. This method conditions your body to anticipate elevation gains while helping you adjust during your sleep.

Unless you find yourself between the ages of 12 and 29, you should seriously consider trekking Lemosho’s 8-day variation. This will give you ample time to adjust to elevation changes and will make for an ultimate Kilimanjaro climbing experience. The 8-day variation, unlike the 7-day hike, performs extremely well with hikers that are under 40 years of age.

Highlights From This Long-Distance Trail

  • Has spectacular scenery of various habitats, nearby towns and distant mountains
  • Performs exceptionally well with first-time hikers that are under 30 years of age
  • Has great acclimatization opportunities
  • Less crowded
  • Has an 85% summit success rate

  • Evacuations on Kilimanjaro are initially on foot and are accompanied by an assistant guide however if you’re unable to walk, 2 assistant guides will carry you with a stretcher up to the nearest point an ambulance or helicopter can be reached.
  • Once in an ambulance, you’ll be transferred to the nearest gate to be picked up or KCMC hospital for treatment. If your condition is severe, you’ll be accompanied by an assistant guide to the hospital where he’ll monitor your condition and write a report. As you undergo medical attention, your family and Embassy will be notified about your health condition. They’ll continue to receive daily reports until you either recover or a close family member arrives.
  • Helicopter evacuations are extremely rare however, in light of an event, you’ll be picked up at Barafu (4,570m/15,000ft) or Kibo (4,724m/15,500ft) and transferred to KCMC hospital along with an assistant guide. These sites are very high and can be extremely dangerous during evacuations so, rescues out of these sites will be conducted on pilot discretion.

Related topics to understand:

While the Lemosho route ranks first overall, the Machame route ranks fourth in difficulty, right after the Rongai route. Though this is the case, the Rongai route’s gradual slopes make for easy ascents. You can expect camping grounds, instead of sleeping huts, on all three climbing routes. However since the Rongai route descends on the Marangu route, you can also expect sleeping huts on the last days of this climbing route.

The 7 Days Lemosho Route Itinerary costs $2,198 pax for open group treks and $2,550 for standard group treks. Private group treks also cost anywhere from $2,550 and above depending on the operator. Hikers looking to cut costs without compromising their trekking experience can opt for the 7 day Machame route. The Machame route offers similar acclimatization opportunities, as the 7 day Lemosho route, but without the forest fees imposed by the national park.

Even though Mount Kilimanjaro’s headquarters is established at the Marangu Gate, the Lemosho route has its own registration office. The only climbing route that doesn’t have its own registration office is the Umbwe route. Registrations for the Umbwe route happen at the Machame gate.

The Shira Plateau, located approximately 13km west of the snow-covered Kibo summit, is in fact a caldera—meaning it is a sunken volcanic crater. Therefore, when traversing the Shira Plateau, you are essentially stepping upon the remnants of Kilimanjaro’s initial volcano that ceased activity roughly 500,000 years ago. Subsequently, the Shira Plateau was filled with lava and debris resulting from the subsequent eruption of Kibo.

I can’t say enough about how amazing my Kilimanjaro summit was thanks to XPATS International! First, the incredible assistance from John in preparation and planning. Not only did he spend a half hour on the phone with me helping me decide which route would be best, but he followed up with emails and messages to make sure I had everything I needed. Highlight – se sent menus and recipes of the foods I’d be eating so I knew what to expect. The guides and porters were top notch! As a solo female hiker, I was definitely apprehensive. But they took such great care of me! They kept me entertained, made me feel safe and protected, and didn’t get frustrated when I asked them for the millionth time how to say the same words in Swahili! Camp was always comfortable and the food was amazing! I celebrated my birthday on summit day and the whole team made it special. First, with muffins, candles and singing at wake up, a toast at summit, and a birthday cake back at the gate.
